Dear Readers,

Spirit Day, sponsored by GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) , is a chance for individuals to stand against the bullying of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth.  The event was founded in 2010 after five high-profile teenage suicides:  Tyler Clementi, Billy Lucas, Asher Brown, Seth Walsh, and Justin Aaberg.  These gay teenagers were all victims of bullying, and felt suicide was the only way to end the suffering inflicted upon them.

A K Social Media Spirit DaySince I was not an out gay transman during my youth, I did not have to suffer any bullying in regards to LGBTQ issues.  However, I was the victim of teasing for other reasons, by both my peers and adults. Individuals can be cruel, and don’t realize the impact such actions can have on others.  Bullying is a product of a number of factors, some of which are perceived differences, misunderstandings, and hatred.

The color purple represents “spirit” on the rainbow pride flag, and sends a message of solidarity against the negative effects that bullying has on the human spirit.

While Spirit Day focuses on standing against bullying, I believe it also represents love, compassion, and a desire to be the visible support that might make the difference in the life of another human being.

Don’t forget to visit GLAAD and take part in the Spirit Day resources and activities.

I enjoy hearing from all of my readers, and look forward to your e-mails. Remember Love is Love…Period.
